: The first F1 World Championship race was held in 1950 at Silverstone, England, with the Alfa Romeo 158, driven by Giuseppe Farina. The car was relatively simple by today’s standards, but it was advanced for its time.
-
Designs: Early F1 cars were essentially modified road cars with little regard for aerodynamics. They had larger engines (around 1.5L) and were heavy compared to modern F1 cars.
-
Dominance of Alfa Romeo and Ferrari: Throughout the 1950s, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and Mercedes-Benz dominated the sport. The cars featured front-engine layouts and large tires, but safety standards were minimal.
- Rear Engine Revolution: The rear-engine layout began to dominate in the 1960s, led by British designer Colin Chapman of Lotus. The first truly successful rear-engine car was the Lotus 25 (1962), which revolutionized car design and set a trend for future cars.
